What role do AI and automation play in our newsroom?

Lagepunkt (lagepunkt.de) may use AI-assisted tools to support research, editing, formatting, translation, metadata, headline options, summaries and transcription. Every piece of published editorial content is reviewed and approved by a human editor before publication. Tools never replace human judgement.

We deploy these digital aids to improve efficiency and accuracy, not to cut corners. The editorial team, led by Chefredaktör Thomas Kuhn, ensures all content meets our standards. AI may help generate draft text or suggest headlines, but a named writer – such as Politikredaktör Niklas Zimmermann or Wirtschaftreporter Johanna Fuchs – takes final responsibility for every article. Our full editorial standards are detailed in our Editorial Policy.

Who is responsible for what we publish?

Chefredaktör Thomas Kuhn (anders.lindqvist@lagepunkt.de) is ultimately responsible for all editorial decisions, including those involving AI-assisted tools. Every article is drafted by a named writer, reviewed by an editor, and fact-checked by Lisa Schumacher’s fact-checking team before publication. No AI tool can author, approve, or publish content without human sign-off.

This chain of accountability guarantees that readers can trust the accuracy and fairness of our reporting. Our Fact-Checking Policy outlines the rigorous process we follow. Lagepunkt Media Ltd, a private company registered in Gibraltar (number C 92009), operates the site with a clear separation between commercial interests and editorial independence – see Ownership & Funding for details.

What are the strict prohibitions on AI use?

AI must never fabricate quotes, sources, interviews, bylines, author experience, or expert profiles. It may not generate content that misleads readers about its origin. All AI-assisted work is documented internally, but we do not label it to readers because we treat it as part of the editorial process under human control.

We also prohibit using AI to generate political opinions or replace the editorial judgement of our named writers and editors. Our team – including Kultur- och samhällsredaktör Maximilian Roth and others listed on Our Team – provides expert analysis that cannot be automated. Any violation of these prohibitions can be reported to our fact-checking lead Lisa Schumacher at factcheck@lagepunkt.de.

What you can expect from us

You can expect that every article on Lagepunkt.de is the product of human editorial judgement, supported by digital tools only where they enhance accuracy and clarity. Our fact-checking process, led by Lisa Schumacher, verifies every claim. Commercial relationships – display advertising, affiliate links, sponsored content – never determine editorial conclusions.

We are transparent about our funding model. Sponsored or commercial material is clearly labelled, and affiliate links are disclosed. Read our Advertising & Affiliate Disclosure for more. Our journalists, from Redaktionschef Maria Müller to the entire newsroom, are committed to the tagline “Nachrichten, Analysen und Hintergründe für Deutschland.” If something goes wrong, our Complaints Procedure outlines how we address it.

How do we keep our use of AI accountable?

We regularly review our AI tools and workflows to ensure they comply with this policy and with journalistic ethics. Any changes are approved by Chefredaktör Thomas Kuhn and communicated to the editorial team. We invite external scrutiny: if you suspect a violation, contact our corrections desk at corrections@lagepunkt.de.

This policy is part of a broader commitment to transparency, alongside our Accessibility Statement and Safeguarding Minors Policy. We also maintain a Copyright & Takedown Policy to protect intellectual property. Our use of AI is always secondary to human editorial judgment – a principle that Chefredaktör Thomas Kuhn enforces across the newsroom.
